You can spend a modest amount on camping gear or you can spend a ton.
Many of us have accumulated camping equipment over the years
so we can't remember how much we spent.
Here's a short list of suggestions:
PLACES TO SHOP
Academy Sports+Outdoors or Sports Authority --
the shopping experience of choice for Pack 505 campers.
Good selection and reasonable prices.
As you probably know, the staff is not very knowledgeable.
REI Co-op --
great selection and great staff.
REI generally carries higher quality goods than Academy
so expect to pay more.
Whole Earth Provision Company & Other High-End Stores --
highest quality selection and (mostly) knowledgeable staffs.
Can be very expensive.
These stores sell equipment that can survive a blizzard on Mt. Denali.
Cub Scout camping is not that extreme.
Internet --
There are many great camping equipment websites.
I've had good luck with www.campmor.com --
Campmor has great close-outs specials.
Watch out for the shipping charges -- they vary greatly.

BRANDS
There are many good brands.
You can almost never go wrong with Coleman camping products
and they are reasonably priced.
Kelty and JanSport are other reliable companies.
